I've fallen behind a bit with the blog this year, it's been a very busy few weeks kicking off the New Year. Wine.Woot! and Rue La La are killing it for wineries Nationally with their direct to consumer channel! If you haven't taken time to "join the discussion" on Wine.Woot! and see what all the hype is about, do it, it's a cool group and one of the best "virtual wine tasting rooms" on the planet.

Well, all I have to say about the Brack Mountain Wine Company portfolio after the first few weeks of 2012 is - grab'em while you can! No foolin' in all my years I've never seen California wines fly onto top-dawg wine lists and fine wine retails shelves so gracefully. Absolutely stunning.

My current favorite...2010 Bench Pinot Noir: 100% Pinot Noir grapes from Sangiacomo Amaral Ranch - just north of the San Pablo Bay. Around $24 a bottle at your favorite wine shop, just ask for it if it hasn't arrived yet! Cheers - Ali

Winter Wineland Done Right!

This weekend Northern Sonoma County is kickin' with the 20th Anniversary of Winter Wineland where thousands of wine fans are checking out the latest releases from wineries all over Dry Creek, Alexander Valley and the Russian River Valley, my stomping grounds for sure! It's been exciting to suggest to friends where to stop and cool to receive messages from everyone after tasting all weekend!

Westside Boys

Last Thursday night I had the pleasure of attending a small (but enormously rowdy) Pinot Noir dinner alongside the winemakers of Davis Family Vineyards, Joseph Swan, Kosta-Brown and Holdredge. It was a night for the record books, I was literally sore the next day from laughing so hard. Zazu Restaurant beautifully paired each wine with local flare and love.

My wines of the night: 2010 Joseph Swan Gewurztraminer & 2008 Davis Family Vineyards Soul Patch Pinot Noir. Must grab a few of these bottles soon for the house. Big Shout Out to Ziggy the Wine Gal for creating this cool event, know I know what everyone had drivers, these pinot boys know how to pour it on!(click on the pics to read the menu and full list of wines poured - EPIC!).

Dinner in The Shop

Saturday night was a real treat - a first ever dinner in "The Shop" at Porter-Bass. The sunset fell behind the hills of the Green Valley while driving West. The sky quickly turned from blue to pink to orange and ended with midnight blue - stars shining bright at the top of Mays Canyon road where Porter-Bass calls home.

A relaxing night with outstanding wines - old and young from Phillips Hill & Navarro in Anderson Valley, Littorai & Porter-Bass and even a sip of bootlegged Brandy made from Pinot Noir grapes.

Gracious hosts Luke and Elena Bass filled The Shop with delicious food and stories that were great fun! Conversation lingered on about who makes the best biscuits around, film new & old, thieves in the night (someone stole their propane tank!) cool weddings and of course a small amount of wine industry talk.

The highlight of the night was the Porter-Bass 2007 RRV Pinot Noir, a perfect glass alongside Elena's savory Cassoulet.

Everything about the evening was darling (dogs running in & out, fireplace flickering, a tractor guarding the door!) and warm even though we were sitting among tools of The Shop. A fun tasting place, can't wait for others to experience the Porter-Bass Shop soon.

Visionaries & Heartbreak

The first few weeks of January in this biz is full of finalizing strategy, confirming calendar dates and taking a few very deep breaths to gear up for a full year ahead.

Direct to Consumer Big Leagues

2012 is already full of exciting opportunities to help wineries with their direct to consumer business on Wine.Woot! and Rue La La. Both sites are very unique sales channels that wineries utilize to expose their brand and sell cases of wine to a National audience. I've learned so much over the past 12 months while working with the great team behind it all - Wine Country Connect - this is a recent article published in the Press Democrat explaining the beginnings and current success of this smart Sonoma, California based team. Both Wine.Woot! and Rue La La are presenting new features to highlight and strengthen their effectiveness for wineries in 2012...which will be a ton of fun for online wine shoppers. Farm to Table

The year also brings a unique new beginning for Brack Mountain Wine Co., I'm helping them grow their 3-tier wine business as well as developing their eCommerce and messaging to the world. In 2011, we seriously couldn't keep wines in stock - demand for these wines in major US cities were stronger than the winery's release schedule!

Getting to know the team behind Brack Mountain Wine Co. back in 2010 was such a blessing, rarely does one meet a winery comprised of both incredible winemaking skills & business acumen. Don't take your eyes off of Brack Mountain this year - they are just getting started and I'm very honored to be on the ground-floor. Stay tuned...

Family Heartbreak

Many of you have asked "what's going on with Pellegrini?". In brief, "it's complicated". Wine sales in Texas are still breaking records (big thanks to Favorite Brands!) and will continue until we hear from the winery that they are out of wine. It's no secret that the Pellegrini's have been in one of the worst family battles on the West Coast. Their beloved Cloverdale Ranch vineyards were sold, 100% of their oldest claim to fame - Olivet Lane Vineyard Pinot Noir grapes were sold the last 2 harvests to other winemakers and fruit was left on the vines of their popular Eight Cousins RRV Zinfandel.

It's all quite shocking, I won't go into any further details, but it's such a sad situation, professionally and personally I am left extremely heartbroken for Ida Pellegrini, the matriarch who has witnessed such a nasty battle among her children. Who knows what the future will bring for Pellegrini Family Vineyards, anyone who has 10 million dollars laying around or so could make their "owning-a-winery" dreams come true this year I'm sure.

So a big year ahead for TexaCali Ali - thank you for your faithful readership, fantastic that the TexaCali Wine Trail is turning 8 years old in May. So many adventures past, present and to come! Cheers and Happy New Year everyone, Ali

12 California wineries you've most likely never tasted before.

I've spent the majority of 2011 out in Sonoma County with multiple outings in other California wine regions and industry events (oh and that EPIC trip to France last Spring too!). So much wine, so little time has never been so true to life. We all know (those who follow this blog) how big the world of wine is and can seem, but it's often bigger for small producers who are fighting their life away to make good wine for the people!

So in the spirit of The 12 Days of Christmas, here's one for the "little guys", buy direct from their websites, send a private message to them via their Twitter accounts, post how much you want to drink their wines on Facebook. Word of Mouth after you sip can literally move mounds of wines for these small-batch (but growing) producers:

1. Hamel Wines

Syrah & Pinot Noirs. Dear Kevin Hamel is a long-time winemaker known for his elegantly crafted Dry Creek and Russian River wines. He has a library of Syrah and Pinot's from 2001, truly works of art in each bottle. Quickest way to reach Kevin is via Twitter @hamelwines to order direct from the winemaker (and wine shipper) himself!

2. Yorba Wines

I was romanced by these wines while following the adventures of my friend Hardy over on The Dirty South Wine Blog all summer long. Shake Ridge Vineyards of Amador County is truly a day dream for me at this point, but am very motivated to head over & see the beauty created by Ann Kraemer in the near future. I personally haven't tried all of the Yorba offerings, but thus far their 2008 Barbera has won me over and of course Hardy's review of the 2007 Yorba Syrah "....DANG! Focus, minerality, acid, and a slow motion karate chop of truth. " is a sure bet when buying Yorba Wines.

3. Cartograph Wines

You may have been fortunate enough to taste their Floodgate Vineyard Gewurztraminer while dining at San Francisco's legendary La Folie. I met the winemaking duo a few summers ago while visiting Healdsburg and have been a big fan of theirs ever since. An amazing amount of endless hours in the vineyards, cellars and marketing gigs. They've also opened a downtown Healdsburg tasting room "The Garagiste" for you to visit anytime and relax with a glass of Cartograph wine (they also share his space with the very lovable Stark Wines) and enjoy the 24/7 labor of love!

4. Denier-Handal Vineyards

So here's one for all you BIG RED wine drinking fanatics...the Handal family has been near and dear to me for many years and so have their Dry Creek and Alexander Valley Wines. Dick Handal owns the vineyards and with the super-power team of Ulysses Valdez and Peter Wellington, his rich and complex Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and "Car Port" wines are a knockout. The best way to buy these are straight from The Cheese Shop in Healdsburg that is owned by Dick's daughter Doralice.

5. Grace Wine Company

Yes, I've written about lovely Angela Osborne's A Tribute to Grace Grenache a few times on the blog already, but each vintage she creates continues to impress. The wine is as beautiful as her mantra "I chose to name my label after two of my favorite things: my Grandmother Grace, and my most beloved attribute. My winemaking intention is to capture this spirit, and stay as close to nature as humanly possible. The trio is completed by the grape itself, which to me encapsulates grace." The 2009 is the current offering - order direct from Angela on the website.

6. *ENOS Vineyards*

I've most likely spent more time overlooking the vines, tasting in their cave and walking the vineyards of this piece of heaven tucked off of Dry Creek Road more than any other vineyard all year long. Thankfully! The estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Tuscan style "Girasole" can be found on the smallest and best wine lists in the Bay Area. Jason Enos has a real vision for the winery and is well on his way to creating the most intriguing portfolio of wines on the West Coast. Best to email the website direct for their small production releases. * I consult with these guys but they have no idea I was writing this piece.

7. Salinia

Owner and winemaker Kevin Kelley is the man who put LIOCO and The NPA Wines on the wine-map along with his teeny-tiny less than 300 case a year Salinia production. I struggle each weekend to just leave my Salinia bottles alone in the cellar, they love to age and boy it's a FANTASTIC occasion everytime I pull a cork. His cool climate syrah is my favorite to date, but can't say anything but greatness is in each bottle of his Pinot Noir and Chardonnay's as well. Contact the winery direct or stop by next time you are crusing through Santa Rosa, it's a quick stop off of HWY 101.

8. Jelly Jar Wines

Owners Andy and Shannon Pestoni over in Napa are making some outstanding Lake County wines for all of us to enjoy. Nope, the wines DO NOT taste like jelly or jam on toast, they pay homage to Italian immigrants who used classic jelly jars as their wine glasses back in the day. I've flipped out over their 2010 Rose of Zinfandel and their 2009 Lake County Zin as well. They've got Barbera on the release calendar later next spring. No hesitation here that this tiny winery will continue to grow in popularity, classic wines for classy folks I'd say. I'm certainly keeping my eye on them, good people. 9. Inspiration Vineyards

Also mentioned them in previous posts this year. I first met owners Jon and Barbara while walking their dogs on the famous Olivet Lane Vineyard in the Russian River Region. John's love for making wines that are enjoyable to all absolutely show in each bottle. A gentle hand in the cellar, John also makes his rounds to visit his beloved markets outside of NorCal and drives their online resources and tasting room as well. Their Russian River Chardonnay steals the show for me - order anytime by clicking on their website or stopping by the winery (Bonus: they are located next to Salinia & The NPA too!).

10. Broc Cellars

Vine Star Red, Dry Stack Grenache, Vine Star White, Carbonic Carignane are NO BRAINERS & confess that I just can't keep them in stock at my house very long. Buy as much as you can (or can't afford) of Broc wines. There's something magical about these and Chris Brockway is the man behind it all. From Grape to Glass, he works it from North Mendocino to hours South of the San Francisco Bay then crushes, blends and SHAZZAMS away at his "Urban"winery in the East Bay. Purchase directly from the Broc website, easy peasy.

11. Nico Wines

When winemaker Kevin Rogers isn't running around telling Olive Trees what to do for his Merchants and Millers Olive Oil Co. thankfully he's making some smoking Italian Varietals from Cali vineyards. I was shocked when at first sip of his Dolcetto and you'll be happy to track down bottles of Nico too. He's hard to reach but worth the effort - send him a message on the Nico Wines facebook page to purchase, pretty sure The Cheese Shop in Healdsburg also carries the wine you can order as well. Kevin's YouTube Tasting, he's on fire! : )

12. Porter-Bass

Big Fan of this Winery - going on a decade now at least. Russian River Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a smidgen of Zinfandel produced. It's all in the family at Porter-Bass winery, vineyards & farm I should say. I get lost in organic dreams each time I visit. Sign up for their mailing list to learn about their gorgeous wine-dinners in the vineyards and buy direct...such special wines and special folks making them. No gimmicks, all good wines for those who support the small guys.

Whew, I tried over a dozen or so bottles of wine during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Most went very well with turkey dinner and all the fixings. Some standouts from California - 2010 Jelly Jar Rose, 2007 Keller Estate Chardonnay (magnum) and the 2005 Davis Family Vineyards RRV Pinot Noir that I've been saving for a few years.

On Saturday night, a healthier meal of grilled pork tenderloin and quinoa salad was cooked and paired magically with a 1986 Pierre et Catherine Breton "Perrieres" Bourgueil Cabernet Franc from Loire. I loved it! Outstanding bright fruit, popping acidity and a touch of spice. Very fresh tasting - which I didn't expect.

You can find this at K&L Wine Merchants, less than a case available today, don't even question the price - a nice holiday provision for yourself or would be a great stucking stuffer for your special wine collecting (drinking) friends and family members.

The Perfect Thanksgiving Wine for Texas Turkey!

2010 Tramonto Rose of Pinot Noir,

one of my very favorite California rosés of all time! Can't wait to sip this alongside our Greenberg Smoked Turkey on Thanksgiving.

The Pinot Noir grapes for this wine are sourced from three of the most sought-after vineyards along Westside Road, in the northern Russian River Valley. The vines are mainly Dijon clones 115,667,777 with small amounts of Eden and Swan Clones.

Color is light peach, a true vin gris. Aromas of watermelon rind, wild strawberries and jasmine. Flavors of peach, cucumber, citrus and a mineral, wet slate finish. Found both on tap and bottle.

Whole Foods Texas carries this bottle, but you can ask for it at your favorite shop anywhere in the Lone Star State. $12-14 a bottle. (Distributed by Favorite Brands-formerly Avante Beverages)

New Arrival of an Old Friend

Received the "New Arrivals" email from K&L Wine Merchants this morning. If I had the budget, I'd go in for a bottle or two. By far my favorite First Growth producer while visiting Bordeaux last spring. Ahhh, what a thrilling time! Here's the blurb about their Chateau Margaux "new arrival". On my wish list for sure...

1995 Margaux, Margaux - 9 available ($575.00)

100 points and a Cellar Selection designation from the Wine Spectator: "Dark color. Black licorice, coffee, currants and black olives. Complex nose. A full-bodied, chewy blockbuster of a wine that is not giving anything at all away. It is like buried treasure still; you have to search for the gold. And it's there. Fabulous. Please give this time." (2007) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium garnet colour going brick at the rim. The nose is beginning to showing signs of evolution with aromas of leather, game, warm cassis, dried plums and cloves. Medium to high acidity, medium body and medium to firm, fine tannins support earthy, blackcurrant-preserve fruit. Long finish. Drink now - 2030+.

Tasted February 2009." (05/09) 94(+?) points Stephen Tanzer: "Excellent deep ruby color. Very complex aromas of blackcurrant, wild plum, violets, minerals, tar and smoky oak. Dense and supple, with great sweetness of fruit. Doesn't have quite the sheer power of the '96, but the flavors build and build. Substantial tannins are chewier than those of the '96 but hit the palate later. 1986 was the vintage with the highest level of polyphenols ever recorded at this estate, but '95 was the runner-up, according to Pontallier. Because this big, tannic wine needed longer barrel aging, it was bottled later than normal, in November of '97." (05/98)

The Zin is IN!

Just in from our friends at Porter-Bass in the heart of the Russian River Region.

Friday we picked the last of the Zinfandel. Two weeks ago it was looking like 2011 would be the third year in a row that we would not be able to make any Zinfandel. Rain had already taken a toll on the already small chardonnay crop. Fortunately we have had enough warm weather to allow the Zinfandel to ripen which thrills me and the chardonnay that is fermenting is filling the cellar and the house with the most delightful aroma. What is this "woot" thing you are doing?

#1 question I get from the national wine trade folks these days...yes, I still have my hands in Texas wine sales for very special projects (more on this later). But if you are a winery you've got to mix up your distribution channels - control it from the mothership. Wine.Woot! has been leading the online-deal a day wine space for years now, they created an entire new category for wine sales & marketing. A few points:

1) Your wine club members are changing, the Gen X'ers and younger fans are about as non-committal as it gets. We want whatever whenever, on our own terms. So what if you offer parties at the winery and special "wine club only" wines - we have more choices than ever to travel and party - and certainly find & purchase special wines from all over the world. Please make your websites better - give us a quick and simple way to buy your wines - 24/7. Yes, there are wineries who are doing this right, but the majority out there haven't updated their websites in years. Get on it.

2) National sales reach - true "grape to table" - both of the websites listed below allow your wines to been seen and purchased from all over the USA - no plane ticket required. This is a no brainer. I hear this over and over "biggest day of traffic our winery ever receives is when we are featured on Wine.Woot! & Rue La La". Wine.Woot! especially - it IS your virtual tasting room for a day. Own the follow-up after your wine is featured too - this is the best part really. You've now got your hands on a few hundred folks that have given you moolah for your wines, show them your love.

3) Stop being a such a silly worrywart. A discounted online offering for 24-48 hours does not hurt your brand, I know your wines are your babies - but please get over yourself. You know how many times I dealt with 10 to 112 case-stacks being slashed on the floor of a fine wine shop or gourmet retailer? And this is while I'm uncorking a few cases of bottles to demo on the floor to move the stacks - terrible for a P&L statement. Also, your favorite Sommeliers are going to love you more when their patrons actually thank them for listing your wine - because they've now had a chance to learn more about them and taste them direct from the winery. A single cool-kids restaurant is not going to "make your brand" with a BTG listing. However - brag away, tell all your facebook friends that they can now guzzle your wines while dining out at the "it" place - hopefully they will get a reservation before your wine is switched off the list.

I admit, I wasn't familiar with Wine.Woot! until an industry consultant helping Pellegrini Family Vineyards turned me onto Woot! last fall. Notice the word "help", you all know by now that I'm in the business of wine and my passion for "helping" family owned wineries is what gets me out of bed in the morning. After running my first campaign with Wine.Woot! and Pellegrini - I was hooked. Smart marketing and even smarter direct sales.

In all my years of agonizing over National FOB's, begging for more allocations, fighting over margins, creating incentives for reps that work (then seeing them fail), waiting for PO's, calling for payment on the PO's, picking up winemakers from the airport at dawn, planning every minute of a market visit, driving 5 hours to stand in a store for a demo to then stay awake for a midnight staff training at a restaurant, receiving calls from key sales reps @3pm on Friday asking if I had any samples at my home that their best on-premise account was short and needs more - (oh and can you meet me 1.5 hours away with them too), printing a forest of marketing materials - sales sheets, shelf talkers, reviews, prices, paying for lunch, paying for breakfast tacos, paying for a steak dinner and kickoff meeting for 30, paying $4 a gallon in gas to drive 2-3,000 a month around Texas to finally & hopefully sell a few boxes of wine. Whew. It's takes an expensive army and an ambitious leader to move millions of dollars of wine through the traditional supply chain - exhausting and a money pit.

Room for both.

Yes, savvy wineries have been getting this for years now. Utilizing sites such as Wine.Woot! and Rue La La for direct sales is a smart, fast and efficient way to brand the winery to a new customer base and ultimately move some boxes. I've heard of a few "whiny-baby" distributors attempt to bully wineries when featured on these sites, what they don't get is that these 2 channels are actually helping build the brands in their local region too. Often on the Wine.Woot! community forums page, members ask where the wines are being poured in restaurants and what local wine shops carry the wine. On Rue La La - well over 3.5 million members are now eyeballing the wine collections - worth more than any BTG placement at the hottest restaurant in any American town. For a winemaker it may not sound as "cool" as having your wine placed on Gary Danko's list, but you can't deposit your ego in the bank either. Also, most likely a member of Rue La La who bought a large format of your wine will jump at the chance of ordering your brand off a sexy wine list too. Wineries have been selling direct to consumers for years through their tasting rooms, wine clubs and mailing lists - this avenue is no different except it's in the world's view - for all to see, learn from and most likely spend their money on!

White Noise.

Wine.Woot! began in 2006, since then similar "flash sites" have popped up but nothing to shake a stick at in regards to building a lasting and loyal impression on wine consumers. Wine.Woot! is one-of-a kind and after a few months now of getting to know the members, it feels like family. They love a good discount (who doesn't?), love hearing from the winemakers, offer honest opinions (love it or hate it), create wine gatherings all over the nation to share their Wine.Woot! bottles with each other and spread the love for the brands they have discovered like no other group of wine lovers I've ever encountered. Oh, and they are buying a few pallets of wine - a day!

Game-Changer.

Visiting the Healdsburg area? Well, here's a proper list that will guarantee a solid wine experience. Wineries are listed in no particular order - they are all #1 to me and my guests who've experienced their hospitality this summer.

Ridge Lytton Springs - Dry Creek

A warm and friendly staff is always waiting to greet you at Ridge. Their new patio overlooking old vines makes this visit comfy and relaxing. Beats the heck out of the zig-zaggy drive up to Montelbello in the Santa Cruz Mountains too! If you're lucky you'll hit it while their Carignan is available. Montebello wines are also for sale here, ask about their "Celler" selections as well, to buy not to taste - just go for it.

Medlock Ames - Alexander Valley

Learn about their "save the earth" philosophy while sipping on tiny production organic Merlot, Cabernet, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Tastings are paired with small bites and wood-fired pizza sometimes too. The real secret: Plan your visit after 3:30, the AV Bar located at the back of the tasting room opens at 5pm - everyone passing through should stop of a refreshing cocktail made with ingredients from the garden or a cold beer - a beautiful patio to watch the sunset.

Natural Process Alliance & Salina Wine Company - Santa Rosa (Russian River area)

This is not a stop for Cowboy Cabernet drinkers. NPA wines are made with TLC naturally and left to do their own thing until poured down the hatch! The wine on tap system complete with Kleen Kanteen's is the hippest way to drink since the milkman made deliveries. Winemaker Kevin Kelly's Salina wines are also here, well he produces less than 300 cases annually, but seriously some of the most fabulous cold climate Syrah, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the planet.

Arista - Westside Rd., Russian River

The Texas born McWilliams family has created an absolute magical experience high a-top Westside Rd. The tasting room is surrounding by Japanese gardens and native boulders that take you to a far-away-land for a bit. The family is 100% dedicated to showing you a good time, plan ahead & schedule a vineyard tour for a real treat! Oh and there's the wine - the Artista wines are a must have for any Pinot Noir lover. I also can't seem to get enough of their Syrah, Cab Franc and Gewürztraminer - while they last.

Copain - Eastside Rd., Russian River

Seriously, I just want to live here. The decor inside and out - coupled with a view overlooking Williams-Seylem and other legendary wineries along over on Westside Rd. is spectacular. You'll encounter an incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating staff, while sipping on "anything you can get your hands on" - ask for them - seriously good wines. Viogner, Rose, Syrah and Pinot Noir have all been sipped and shipped among my visiting friends and family this year. Only wish I bought more Rose!

Kokomo - Dry Creek Valley

For the love of dogs! I get my Labrador love fix walking in the door at Kokomo. The friendly owners are followed around by their four-legged buddies. The wines are for us humans, almost always featuring a new release or small production wine reserved for Wine Club members too. I guzzled mounds of their simple but delicious Dry Creek Sauvignon Blanc this summer - looking forward to opening a few pinots this fall. The tasting room is no-frills, but the hip music and groovy winery t-shirts are a big bonus.

Inspiration Vineyards - Santa Rosa (Russian River area)

Yes, you are now in an industrial park next to a Baptist Church!! Situated across from the NPA tasting room and winery, the tasting room at Inspiration makes you feel right at home- almost like it's "game night" and it's going to be awhile before you want to leave. Small production Chardonnay, Syrah, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Viogner are all a treat, one of my favorite discoveries this year. I first met the owners Jon and Barbara while taking their nightly walk through the vineyards off of Olivet Rd. where they live, they are as lovely as the wines they create!

Jordan - Alexander Valley

Call ahead to schedule your tasting and tour. The picturesque grounds take you right to Bordeaux's Chateau Margaux. The winery is tucked away in the hills of Alexander Valley, but extremely easy to locate. You'll feel like a million bucks walking into the winery and will have plenty of options in how to spend a few bucks too. I recently walked away with a bottle of 2003 Jordan Cabernet - the wines age very well and the library wines are "the get" when visiting since their distribution across the US is now everywhere from grocery stores to fine wine shops.

Davis Family Vineyards - Healdsburg

The "gargiste" tasting room is open Thursday - Sunday only and is a real treat to visit. Looking for Napa Cabernet while in Sonoma County? This is your stop. Guy Davis always has a few wines open that are not in national distribution too - just ask. You'll be greeted by Lexi most days, who keeps things lively and fun during your visit. A lot of the time you'll meet the family too, Cole is Guy's right hand and often brings grandson Luke in tow. Ahh what a cutie! Take a peek high above the tasting room bar to see the Davis Family Vineyards "Grand Champion" Saddle Trophy for winning the Texas size wine competition at the Houston Rodeo's International Wine Competition a few years ago - yeah Davis Family Cabernet won the whole show - this is a big deal.

Michel-Schlumberger - Dry Creek

Warning: bring your good mood please, this winery is full of fun and laughter. Most likely the best "events" in all of Dry Creek - check their calendar when planning your trip. Pinot Blanc, Rose, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah are always showing great at this stop. Insider tip - my favorite place to sip and learn - ask for the side patio near all the humming birds, a beautiful place to relax.

2010 Cyprus Russian River Chardonnay

From one of the oldest vineyards in the Russian River AVA - vines are planted on the old AXR1 rootstock. It's not often I taste a California chardonnay that I enjoy this much! The wine has great acidity, lemon cream pie flavors with a pinch of minerality and finishes long and supple.

100% barrel fermented on new and neutral French Oak. Fermentation was long and cool resulting in wines that did not go dry until January (Harvest date: Oct. 20th). Lees were stirred in barrel every two weeks until bottling to develop its rich mouth feel and layers of complexity. 100% French Oak, 40% new and aged on fermentation lees for 9 months.

Case production: 230 $24 a bottle

Whew - a busy few months for TexaCali Ali organizing "insiders tours" for friends & corporate groups out in the Bay Area. I've even done the same for Californians who are visiting Austin this fall (Perlas for cocktails, Congress for Dinner, Curra's for TexMex...it's a long long list of goodies).

Yesterday's "team-building" outing included 26 Google groovers & shakers who spent the day learning about wine - oh and tasting a few bottles too. It was a day- long party for sure, everyone dressed to the "day-party nines" and were glued to their Androids - though I did see a few working their iPhones. Side note - I've been told over and over the Android rocks.

Winery of the Labor Day Weekend

So just about a year ago I headed out West for a bit of a "reset" after a brutal start to 2010. Among everything that I'm over the moon about since California welcomed me back (see Back in Cali post ) meeting Jason Enos and his team behind Enos Vineyards and Brack Mountain Wine Co. has been such a pleasure.

I have to laugh, Jason and I are the same age, exactly one day apart actually and pretty much everything he has created in his life has been a close (yet distant) day dream of mine. Married, 2 kids, Labrador Retrievers, house in the vineyards, pool in the vineyards, pizza oven overlooking the pool in the vineyards, his own winery and of course his ability to create and produce world class wines from California. Yep, Jason pretty much has my dream life. So helping him with building his dream is totally cool yet very inspiring for me to get after it and go for it too. Most fabulous "side-project" ever for TexaCali Ali! Nice and refreshing after dealing with some severe egomaniac & bat-shit-crazy jerks over the years in the wine biz too. Jason and his team have their feet and the ground and are great fun to be around!

So Texas, the wines you are sipping on draft at Whole Foods - Bar Lamar and Frank for starters are those of Brack Mountain Wine Co. Also, bottles of Cyprus, Tramonto and Bench are starting to appear in the best restaurants and wine shops all over Texas. They certainly are killin' it all over California, Chicago, NC and New York City. Bay Area- K&L Wine Merchants is currently rollin' through their 2009 Bench Cabernet Sauvignon - you can find the deepest selection at D&M on Filmore in Pac Heights.

I'll be sipping on the Estate Enos Cabernet, Enos Girasole, Cyprus Chardonnay this holiday weekend - the back story of all the hard work by Jason and his team is so incredibly inspiring and I raise my glass to them! Cheers - TexaCali Ali

Discovering the local wines of Grace, Brack Mountain, Broc Cellars, Phillips Hill, Hamel, Nico, Arnot-Roberts, NPA, Michel-Schlumberger and the real people behind them. The Handal & Bellino gangs, my California Families. Stuck in a snow storm and getting out while laughing. Falling in love. The biscuits made at Zin in Healdsburg. Flour Girl Cakes. 40 Days @ Three Dog Yoga in Santa Rosa, this changed my life. The smell of a winery, right when I walk through the doors - every single time. Bundling-up when the sun goes down. Old friends who are new again. Hot dogs a the Giants game. Walking to dinner. Anderson Valley - is every bit as lovely as I remember it every time I'm there. No mosquitoes. Rolling Fog. Happy Hippos. Shout-outs on the radio by my dear friend Ziggy the Wine Gal (thank you BGD). Seeing shows at the Great American Music Hall. Wine Country Connect, the entire staff inspires me each day. This summer is full of adventures in Northern California for me and for many TexaCali Fans! Oh Alison, this information is so incredibly helpful!! I just made reservations for River's End and couldn't be more excited! We would be honored to receive a "special tasting" if it's not too much trouble on your end. I'm just so thrilled to go to Davis Family Vineyards and Medlock Ames! They had a huge part in me selecting northern Sonoma over the other regions. I've read so much about them on your blog and I can't wait to visit and try their wines. I really appreciate the suggestions you gave us. With our time being somewhat limited, it's helpful to be pointed in a direction from someone who knows!

I can't thank you enough for your fabulous recommendations! We were able to get to most of your winery selections and REALLY loved them all. I really, I mean really loved Copain's wines. They were literally 4 minutes from the cottage where we were staying! I really loved all their wines and the facility was beyond gorgeous. Kenny at Medlock was our last winery of the trip and he was a blast! We thoroughly enjoyed him and would love to be included in any "launch" activities you might help him plan here in Texas... we got a lot of personal attention and a very nice wine/food pairing as well.

We also did the canopy/zip lining through the Redwoods that you recommended and that was fantastic. Such a great way to see the Redwoods and get some activity as well. Our last night there we went to River's End for dinner and WOW, you weren't kidding about the view! The food was fantastic as well. My husband had the Elk and it was fabulous, but I had the salmon and it was to die for. Thank you so much for taking the time to help us plan a wonderful vacation. I had no idea just how gorgeous it is up there. I was seriously in awe at every turn!

2009 Barrique Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir Only a tiny amount of this super QPR was made and can be found at K&L Wine Merchants on the West Coast. This is going to match up perfectly with lamb burgers with caramelized onions hot off the grill.

2007 Pellegrini Family Vineyards Cloverdale Ranch Merlot this red is for after the sun sets and when we're surrounded by homemade brownies. Always a classic representation of Alexander Valley Merlot $20

2007 Davis Family Vineyards Zinfandel only one bottle left of this in my cellar and boy do I love this old-vine Zin produced from 100+ year old vines in the Russian River. It's wouldn't be July 4th without it! SOLD OUT.

2008 Mark David Cabernet Franc I have been thinking about this bottle ever since I walked away with it after tasting at Arista Winery a few weeks ago. This is "last bottle of the night" worthy. Outstanding wine.

Porch Pounders, Camping Wines, Poolside Sippers, BBQ Reds - we all have our favorite summer wines and our favorite places to drink them. I've found many new ones recently now that summer has hit full stride I must open. I'm calling these my "Hammock & Garden Wines" since my little backyard oasis is kickin' cool these days.

On a recent trip to the Anderson Valley I came home with these beauties:

Toulouse Vineyards is always a must stop for many reasons...I love the owners, their dog Tess, the views and of course their beautiful wines. I seriously like all their wines, but gathered a few bottles of their new 2010 Rosé of Pinot Noir up first. Vern sent me home with a special bottle of Riesling as well.

Handley Cellars as you know has been near and dear to me for years. I only tasted wines that are not available in Texas. The 2010 Sauvignon Blanc-Semillion, 2008 Viognier & the 2007 Ranchhouse Red were standouts. So of course, I love their pink wine too. The Handley 2010 Pinot Noir Rosé is made with organically-farmed grapes from Handley’s Estate Vineyard. DELICIOUS!

Not much to say about Navarro Vineyards that you don't already know - just buy the stuff. They have the best winery direct to consumer program and wine club in all of California. I walked away with a mixed case - this was my favorite for the Garden wine for this summer: 2010 Edelzwicker

Meyer Family Cellars was such a new treat for me. I was turned onto wine years ago after reading Justin Meyer's "Plain Talk about Fine Wine" and haven't stopped since. They are known for their hand-crafted Reds (love their Syrah!) and fantastic Port which I couldn't resist buying...but for the Hammock and Garden selection I loaded up on their new 2010 Rosé of Syrah. The bottle after drained I shall keep around and use as a cold water bottle too, gorgeous.

Big surprise of the day was the Drew Family Wines bottle of Albarino. I had no idea Albarino was growing in Anderson Valley. What a kick! I've had at least 100 bottles of Albarino in my lifetime and this one was spot-on. A fun discovery - who knew?

Last stop of the day, minutes before closing time was at Phillips Hill Estates. And am I glad we made it! Toby Hill is an artist and has now taken his "art" to an entire different form - winemaking. BRAVO! I liked every wine and that rarely happens. His 2009 Valenti Vineyard Pinot Noir made the hair on the back of my neck standup after sipping. I also walked away with bottles of Gewurtraminer and unoaked Chardonnay.

I have a feeling I'm a lifer for this winery now too. His dog "Jackson" sat on my feet while I rubbed his head...yeah, I love that about good dogs.

Whew. one more day for me before I can take a break from a jam-packed week of work and projects. The last few nights a chilled glass of Michel-Schlumberger 2010 La Bise Pinot Blanc has been a welcome and tasty light at the end of the daily tunnel.

I had the pleasure of visiting the winery a few weeks ago (they were the star feature on Wine.Woot! for National Chardonnay Day on May 26) to pick up samples for a photo shoot. If it weren't for the total sell-out on Woot! that day, their gorgeous Lu Brume Chardonnay might have beat out their new La Bise Pinot Blanc as my best friend this week. Maybe.

I've said it a thousand times over the years, I am a closet Pinot Blanc junkie. When I get my hands on a good one, I just can't seem to open much else until the stash is depleted. I've paired the Schlumberger Pinot Blanc with simple meals this week of king salmon, sweet potato fries, turkey burgers and veggie risotto.

Notes from the winemaker (I love their clever tasting notes):

Poor Blanc, her cousin Noir continues to make headlines while Blanc consistently works hard every day and raises a family every year…all this without the glory and fame of Noir’s life. Don’t worry Blanc, we at Michel-Schlumberger are here for you.

2010 allowed us to craft another vintage of Pinot Blanc that again showcases the dynamic nature of people, product and place. Fermented in stainless steel at a cool average temperature of 44 degrees Fahrenheit, the nose is delicate yet complex with hints of starfruit and light jasmine while the palate is as consistent as you’ve come to expect from Michel-Schlumberger Pinot Blanc. A distinct place with distinctive wines…this Pinot Blanc is no exception. Best enjoyed with croissants in a hot air balloon. Cheers!

...is what I do - so says my 4 year old nephew Brady. Exactly 2 minutes and 20 seconds around midnight to cruise the most famous bridge in the world (according to Brady and his Aunt Ali). I returned from a quick trip to see the family back in N. Texas last night and was welcomed home to Cali by the beautiful Golden Gate.

One of the best things about my new chapter on the West Coast are new friendships, I met Angela Osborne almost a year ago during a visit to Healdsburg. After chatting a bit she poured me a glass of her wine - this sealed our friendship forever! No really, what a kick to know a cool woman who's as lovely as the wine she makes.

No time to write a long one this evening, but want to say thank you to everyone following this blog...

The TexaCali Wine Trail is going on 7 years now - May 2005 The TexaCali Wine Trail began! It's been nothing but pure fun to write and babble about this crazy wine trek I've been on and continue to climb through. I must have read over the words listed above on the header a few thousand times since 2005 "Never let the odds keep you from pursuing what you know in your heart you were meant to do", thank God there have been more fabulous days than rough ones (but man the rough ones were real doozies).

The next chapter is a big one for this gal, helping wineries sell and market their wines is exactly what I love to do. An exciting time to be in this line of work with all the new online resources, communication tools and whopping amount of folks drinking wine in America these days. The Cali in TexaCali Ali is building momentum and I'm well on my way with both feet on the ground and a big determined smile on my face. But about the blog...

Last Thursday night Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and Old Crow Medicine Show embarked on a tour unlike any in recent memory. "Traveling exclusively in vintage rail cars, the three bands will journey across the American Southwest over the course of a week. The aptly titled Railroad Revival Tour features the three bands playing concerts at six unique outdoor locations along the route", http://railroadrevivaltour.com.

I was quick to step up when told "hey we need wine to stock the train bar car for the bands and guests for the 8 day tour", asked my dear pals from Austin who were in charge of the F&B for the Railroad Revival Tour. TexaCali Ali to the rescue...a hard request I know (whatever Mumford & Son's has been rocking my house for quite some time now!).

The Tour kicked off in Oakland, California last Thursday. Mother Nature was enjoying the show too, one of the most beautiful nights I've ever seen in NorCal. The location of the concert was in the train yards almost under the East Bay side of the Bay Bridge. 8,000 fans plus all the bands saw the most glorious sunset over San Francisco, blue skies with streaks of orange and pink for hours. Mind blowing GORGEOUS!

Upon arrival I received a long walk-through of the train, for the most part, each of the compartments were old & classy, the air felt like Cary Grant was going to turn a corner at anytime. The Chefs were hard a work getting ready for a feast after the show and old-school bartenders were busy helping to situate the wines as well.

Stan (pictured on the couch here) owns the circa 1941 railroad car that holds the old-timey western bar - which also had handfuls of instruments for the guys to pick up and play at anytime. The stories from this 8 day Railroad Revival Tour are going to be off-the-hook!

A big toast @ midnight was scheduled as soon as the train pulled away for their next depot - San Pedro - outside of LA. I'm sure Superfan & Hollywood Cutie Jake Gyllenhaal was at this show singing along...I wonder if he likes Mumford & Sons more than I do?! Naaahh!

The entire vibe of the night was so freakin' happy. So many smiles, laughter and hugs backstage. It was quite a feat for these three bands to create such a grand tour and everyone from the drummers to their little kids dancing on stage were having a total blast. It was so great to watch the bands from backstage, side stage, inside the train and best of all during the encore set - right on the stage with this group of magical musicians. Fantastic Fun & one EPIC night for all!

Still shaking off the jet-lag and detoxing from my fabulous 2 weeks in France, I am in the midst of a few more posts about the trip, so stay tuned for those shortly.

This week however, my new boss at Wine Country Connect, David Studdert - was profiled by Jordan Mackay (one of my favorite wine & spirits writers) in the NY Times. Since 2006, David has been quietly leading a BEHEMOTH direct sales channel for wineries to reach a national market - with very mindful effort.

I admit, I wasn't familiar with Amazon's Wine.Woot! until an industry consultant helping Pellegrini Family Vineyards turned me onto Woot! last fall. Notice the word "help", you all know by now that I'm in the business of wine and my passion for "helping" family owned wineries is what gets me out of bed in the morning. After running my first campaign with Wine.Woot! and Pellegrini - I was hooked. Smart marketing and even smarter direct sales.

In all my years of agonizing over National FOB's, begging for more allocations, fighting over margins, creating incentives for reps that work (then seeing them fail), waiting for PO's, calling for payment on the PO's, picking up winemakers from the airport at dawn, planning every minute of a market visit, driving 5 hours to stand in a store for a demo to then stay awake for a midnight staff training at a restaurant, receiving calls from key sales reps @3pm on Friday asking if I had any samples at my home that their best on-premise account was short and needs more - (oh and can you meet me 1.5 hours away with them too), printing a forest of marketing materials - sales sheets, shelf talkers, reviews, prices, paying for lunch, paying for breakfast tacos, paying for a steak dinner and kickoff meeting for 30, paying $4 a gallon in gas to drive 2-3,000 a month around Texas to finally & hopefully sell a few boxes of wine. Whew. It's takes an expensive army and an ambitious leader to move millions of dollars of wine through the traditional supply chain - exhausting and a money pit.

Room for both.

Yes, savvy wineries have been getting this for years now. Utilizing sites such as Wine.Woot! and Rue La La for direct sales is a smart, fast and efficient way to brand the winery to a new customer base and ultimately move some boxes. I've heard of a few "whiny-baby" distributors attempt to bully wineries when featured on these sites, what they don't get is that these 2 channels are actually helping build the brands in their local region too. Often on the Wine.Woot! community forums page, members ask where the wines are being poured in restaurants and what local wine shops carry the wine. On Rue La La - well over 3.5 million members are now eyeballing the wine collections - worth more than any BTG placement at the hottest restaurant in any American town. For a winemaker it may not sound as "cool" as having your wine placed on Gary Danko's list, but you can't deposit your ego in the bank either. Also, most likely a member of Rue La La who bought a large format of your wine will jump at the chance of ordering your brand off a sexy wine list too. Wineries have been selling direct to consumers for years through their tasting rooms, wine clubs and mailing lists - this avenue is no different except it's in the world's view - for all to see, learn from and most likely spend their money on!

A Saturday in the Rhone - à la provençale!

Cecile & Mauricio hosted us for lunch today at their home in Sablet. After a foggy walk through the vineyards from our apartment (Cecile owns this – fantastic! http://www.gite-vaucluse.com/), the sun appeared, wines flowed and a delicious French-Italian lunch went on for hours. The house was owned by her 93 year old grandmother for years and now Cecile has converted it to this lovely modern and colorful cozy home.

Cecile makes and imports wines to the US and Mauricio, her Italian love is in real-estate in the French Riviera. They served fresh pasta with simple tomato and basil, grilled lamb, an assortment of cheese (Mauricio pulled out a special Italian gorgonzola too!) finished with the most delicious strawberry tart I've ever tasted. We spoke for hours about our love of all things Rhone, Provence & good Italian wines! Ahh, then the walk back through the vineyards induced my first 2 hour nap in ages! Day 4 in France. Soo much to share with you all, I'm having a hard time narrowing down what to write. It's been a week of visual & tasty inspiration. I'm mellow today, trying to decide what has been the biggest impression on me so far, it's all lovely and soo incredibly beautiful here. But the PEOPLE... I've been so fortunate to meet and spend time with are who and what has made this week in France so very special for me.

Tons of photos, books, websites, marketing materials all list and show off the terroir of the region and a gazillion important wine facts, but none of these things can capture of the true spirit of the Rhone Valley- the people here. I've had some of the best French winemakers on my home-turf back in Texas over the years, I so prefer to be here with them,on their dirt and see their soul.

On Wednesday, I had the great privilege of spending the afternoon with Daniel Brunier - http://www.vignoblesbrunier.fr/ ‘Wine is my life”, sure we had plenty to talk about regarding his wineries, projects and the juice, but Daniel’s story, past and present was most impressive. He’s now in the midst of planning and running his 5th winery – both in France and Lebanon. Daniel spoke fondly of his 2 teenage children, his wife who runs an advertising agency and how he loves to spend quality time with them up in the mountains of the Ardeche. He smiled a lot during our tasting but his biggest smiles of the day came when speaking of his family. The lineup of wines were fascinating, Les Pallieres, Domaine La Roquete, Le Vieux Telegraph and Massaya. Each producer poured separately and vertically 2008 – 2010 (most were barrel samples).

Highlight for me: 2010 Domaine La Roquete, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, ( “Echantillon – means sample bottle”). 1/3 Grenache Blanc 1/3 Clairette 1/3 Roussillon. It was everything I like to taste from a CdP Blanc!

Thursday brought the hustle!! I was warned that the day would be at least 12 hours long of tastings. Yes it was and let me tell you, I loved every second of it. At exactly 8:27am as I was brushing my teeth hear a knock at the door and it’s Laurent Terrisson the owner of http://www.terrisson-wines.com/ arriving to take us around for the day.

I seriously met my French Match – he runs a company much like how I ran TexaCali Wine Co. from 2005-2010, here from the South of France. He met us with the day complete - a printed list of wines to be tasted during the day in hand, set appointments for the day and great tunes on the car radio as we climbed into his “gentlemen farmer’s truck” and began the day.

Laurent was full of life yesterday, telling us jokes, flirting a bit but buttoned up to the very smallest detail of the day. I loved it. It was such a breath of fresh air to be “on the other side” for the day and see someone else’s mindful planning play out. Laurent made a point to close each tasting with a reminder to my travel partner of what she needed, already ordered, pricing if she ordered more and etc. Always on point, always leading the dialog and questions into the sale. The thrill of the game for sure, I soaked up every minute of it.

This day was hardest for me - I am without my Blackberry during this entire trip and seeing him on it and conducting multiple business tasks all day was KILLING me. ARGH. I can't even recall the last time I've been without it!! I know - this makes many of you roll-your-eyes.

Moving on...Laurent too spoke of his family, his life outside of work and his future travel and business ambitions. So very much in common, I can't wait to tell a joke he shared with me to the appropriate crowd "Alison you must perfect the punchline!" and find the "Allison" song from England that he belted out all day.

Next, Laurent took us to meet the two brothers of http://www.domainejaume.com/ , we tasted their Domaine Courtois – and I seriously liked them all - - beautiful wines for the price. Upon leaving the winery, we were shown a few vineyards located in one of the most Northern parts of the Southern Rhone (or most Southern parts of the Northern Rhone!). Freaks me out a bit how similar the soils are to Texas – our West Texas soils to be exact.

They day went onto a DELICIOUS tasting with Jean-Francois Gras & Jean Louis Colombier. It’s so fun to hear about who they love doing business with both in Texas and California, we are very like-minded this way! We all spent lunch together in Gigondas, talking about the biz, hearing about their recent travels to Germany (Redbull & vodka are evil) and hearing about life around the Rhone.

My first sighting of a goofy French bull dog in a dining room happened as well, oh Henley would have loved France. Toward the end of lunch, my heart sank a bit as I hear about the afternoon for them ahead, attending a funeral of a small child who fell into a well. We left lunch together wishing rainbows appearing in the sky…

Off to Châteauneuf-du-Pape to meet one of Decanter Magazine’s “Winemaker of the Year” - Alexandre Favier http://www.chantecigale.com/. Alex is only 29 and a total hardworking STUD!

Due to his father having 2 heart-attacks when Alex was 17 – he stepped up to the plate at a very young age. He does everything, and means it. We tasted 4 reds and a white, the white was totally mind-blowing by the way. Think French Pressed Apricots!! His red CdP’s were amazing, a real treat, I’d like to track down the 2008 vintage when back in the US. The 2009 is singing too…the Vielles Vignes is made from 70-80 yr. old vines and made my head spin.

Right as we left the winery I asked Alex if he enjoyed working in the cellar more or out in the vineyards, quickly he replied “the vineyards, the wine is about the vines and the terrior” with a big sparkling smile of course. I told Laurent he needs to send him to the US to make a few sales calls, he quite reminds me of dear Luis Reginato, a famous young winemaker and vineyard expert I admire in Argentina.

So our day with our "Cheerful-Handler" closed with a big Northern Rhone tasting in a wine lab in Rasteau with Laurent. Seriously, he worked every minute of the day to the fullest, Oh Snap! You Rock Laurent. Very sweet to know how well you treat your profession of representing winemakers. Bravo.

Laurent left us in the good hands of Valerie Aigron @ Cave de Rasteau who took us to a wonderful dinner at a “Natural” wine bar in Vaison La Romaine. Valerie travels the world for her COOP in Rasteau and when we asked her how she was doing…”my life is perfect, I love my job”. Over dinner she shared with us how she was in Japan then China a few days ago, then off to Canada next week. I’ve got nothing on her miles…

Travels to Italy, Argentina, Spain, Japan...you'd think France would have been first for this gal, finally 2011 brings it! I'm off to a 14 day romp in the Rhone Valley and Bordeaux with a handful of my wine-mentors from K&L Wine Merchants - which makes this trip even sweeter. Many of you know I got my true wine biz start working for K&L Wine Merchants back in 2003. I walked into my position with eyes-wide-open and soaked up knowledge from every person and every sip, every single day.

Hours learning from Ralph Sands, not only listening to him talking and selling to collectors over the phone but really discerning my own palate while I tasted alongside Ralph. He probably doesn't know this, but I use to hustle to get in front of him during staff tastings each week. I would sip, spit and think about what it was I tasted then would eagerly await his notes to compare my own taste buds to Ralphs. This built great confidence in my wine palate quickly, which I'll forever be grateful.

I also had the great pleasure of learning from Clyde and Trey Beffa. I was a California girl from the start, mega enthusiasm and passion for the family winemakers all over the West coast actually. One of my fondest memories is when Trey asked me if I would begin writing a blurb about domestic wine for the September 2003 K&L newsletter - 'Plain Talk about Fine Wine...", funny to think of my excitement to write about wine now that I've been blogging weekly since 2005!

So the next few weeks ahead are full of new experiences in the Rhone Valley and Bordeaux specifically. Anchoring in beautiful Avignon for the first week, I'll be alongside Mulan Chan, who's made quite the name for herself leading the Rhone category for K&L over the years. We have a packed itinerary visiting some of my favorite producers and tasting some new wines as well.

The last few days of the trip brings the Big Guns...I'll have the great pleasure of visiting and tasting all the First Growths of Bordeaux and a few hundred more (I'm not kidding here). Back in the day while at K&L, I was lucky enough to attend the EPIC Bordeaux dinners that Clyde and Ralph would put on. I learned so much sitting next to famous Bordeaux vintners and tasting their gorgeous old and new releases at those dinners. To be tasting on their home-turf will be fascinating.

Tune into the TexaCali Wine Trail, I'll do my best to post along the way. I'm looking forward to seeing many of my wine friends from all over the world in Bordeaux especially. Honestly I already feel like a kid in a candy store and am thrilled to see what the next 14 days brings...Cheers! Ali

Up Close and Personal with Stony Hill Vineyard

As the TexaCali Wine Trail moves along, I am thrilled to have spent a few hours with Peter McCrea recently of the legendary Stony Hill Vineyard. I mentioned to a few friends of mine who know my wine preferences well "figures you would make the trek over to Napa for the first time in months for a Cult White Wine producer!". Whew, a very curvy and steep drive up from Hwy 29 just a few miles south of Calistoga atop the St. Helena western hillside sits Stony Hill Vineyards.

They were right, what a pleasure to taste the beautifully and electicly made wines of Stony Hill alongside the McCreas and Mike Chelini, their winemaker of 40+ years. They've been making fruity "non-oakey", non-maloactic, Chardonnays, White Rieslings and Gewurztraminers for fifty-eight years straight.

The afternoon sunshine was beaming down the first hint of spring warmth as I walked past 48 year old Riesling vines. To see the very tops of the vineyards I had to take a few steps back - a vertical gaze straight to the top of the mountain side that faces East towards St. Helena. I couldn't help but text photos of the old Riesling vines and post a few pics to my Facebook during my walk with Peter - overwhelming historic views to share!

Character with Style...

What was most surprising to me during the tour of the tiny old winery - "the French Oak barrels were purchased about 38 years ago", yep, the wines scream "NO NEW OAK". A welcome tasting experience indeed.

In the very back corner of the winery, I pointed to barrel with red streaks stains around the bung hole, "what is this red wine?"...Peter was quick to thieve a little out of the barrel and fill my glass. Beautiful!! It's Cabernet Sauvignon from their estate vineyard planted on the West side of the hill in 2004. Of course the Cab was made in the same vein as all the Stony Hill whites...all about the fruit! I loved it. Currently they are selling their 2008 Red Table Wine - they produced about 195 cases of the 2008 vintage and are selling it for a steal $25 a bottle. This is a Napa Cabernet I could drink weekly. A pleasant surprise.

Soon after the walk along the grounds we tasting inside the McCrea home. The house next to the winery is the original home purchased by Eleanor and Fred McCrea in 1943. I felt the history just upon walking through the front door streaming at me. What a magical hillside to have created memories on for so many years. I'm super glad to know the youngest generation (a daughter and son about my age) of the McCrea family is actively involved in the winery to this day. Stony Hill is an old producer and the "new generation" of world class Sommeliers and Wine Pros should be showing off these wines to their followers no doubt!

The line up in the kitchen that day included:

2009 Stony Hill Gewurztraminer - 12% alcohol. Very Dry and floral. Sees time in French Oak, which gave it a tiny hint of softness on the finish.

2009 Stony Hill White Riesling- 1% residual sugar, 12% alcohol. A fun riesling to "blind" your pals on...honeydew melon on the nose, touch of apple in flavor - very dry.

2008 Stony Hill Chardonnay - Tasted pretty opposite of how I remembered my first sip of Stony Hill years ago - a bottle that was at least 6-8 years old. The 2008 was just a baby - a baby Burgundy if I was blinded on this glass though! Great structure but has not come into her glory days yet. Peter told me the 2007 is much more lush in flavor than the 2008, but haven't pulled a cork on the 2007 yet - tasting notes posted as soon as I do - promise.

2008 Stony Hill Red Table Wine - another low alcohol at 13.8% - which is crazy speaking in Napa Valley Cab terms. What I loved about this red wine, it was all about the deep red fruit - berries to be exact that drew me into the glass and made my mouth water once sipped. It's a perfect medium-bodied red for me, the tannins were slight, but structured.

2008 Semillon de Soleil- screams Creme Brulee! Went home with 2 bottles...can't wait to pair these at a fun dinner party, a total treat!

Just not relevant. Many of you know along with fine wine from all over the world, I dedicated myself for a handful of years to teaching the state of Texas about Japanese Sake. In 2006 I was honored to travel to Japan & meet these highly regarded Japanese Sake Brewers and experience the reverence & beauty of their legendary craft...each warm smile, respectful bow and generous spirit propelled me each day to spread their passion. Today, I pray for their safety, strength, and their beautiful country tonight with a heavy heart. Texas Welcomes Milla Handley this week!

Handley Cellars

Last Monday I spent a beautiful day with Handley Cellars in California's Anderson Valley - approx. 10 miles inland from the Mendocino Coast. Milla Handley and her co-winemaker Kristen Barnhisel hosted a group of wine-pros from around the country to learn more about their Pinot Noir program, and to experience blending a bottle of Pinot.
The day begin with touring Pinot Noir vineyards in the Anderson Valley ... Ferrington, Helluva and Handley's Organic Estate Vineyard. A bottle of Handley Anderson Valley Pinot in some years can have as many as 10 different vineyard sites, or as little as 1 - depending on the particular role Mother Nature played. The group spent the afternoon blending a bottle of Pinot using 5 different vineyard sites. "Day Dream" was my final blend, Milla suggested I wait until XMAS to open. I'll report back then.

For now... a few quick facts from Monday:

1. Handley Cellars is located in "Region 1" , a scale the folks at UC Davis created to determine the coolest (the chilly kind) to the warmest climate regions. Region 1 means the most days at 50 degrees and under.

2. Bell Beans and Arugula are grown as cover-crop between the vineyard rows. Why? They hold a lot of nitrogen down in the roots which is very good for the soil and grapevines.

3. Most of the Anderson Valley Pinot vineyards are pruned already this year and are budding early.

4. Soils: Most of the soils are clay and sandy loam, with 5-15% rock.

5. Temperatures in the Anderson Valley swing BIG...it can reach 100 degrees by 3pm and dip back down to 45 degrees at night. This is fabulous in creating acidity levels and the high heat days help prevent disease and mildew.

6. How to tell if the vines need water: If you reach your hand inside the canopy (where the grape clusters hang and are surrounded by their leaves) and it's the same temperature as the outside air - they need water. The canopy should create it's own little AC system within the vines.

7. Handley uses a propane flame to control weeds. It's the shot with the guy on the tractor down below, flames shoot out at the very bottom on the backsides behind the tractor and hit just deep enough to kill the roots.

8. Handley Estate Vineyards (Martini Clone = big fruit flavors, lower tannins and silky smooth texture) were planted in 1987, the water tower and ranch house were built in 1906. Milla, her husband and their 2 daughters lived in the old water-tower for awhile (great stories about this time in their lives, ask me in person, too long to type now!).

9. 2007 is the current Handley Cellars Anderson Valley Pinot Noir release.

10. Handley uses solar-power and organic growing practices. You can see the solar-panels in the background of the first picture on the right with Kristen and Milla.

Maypearl, Texas: Meet my Papa and Grandmother Jackson, these long-time love birds were always cookin' in the kitchen together for each other & guests. Almost all of my memories of them revolve around sitting at their big oak table in the kitchen or standing in front of the wall-mounted gas furnace watching them cook. Sipping on "sweet-tea" (the only place I was allowed to drink it) and snacking on whatever was put in front of me was always so fun as a kid. I can almost smell the classic enchiladas Grandmother made, and my favorite Papa meal was his big country breakfast of fluffy hot biscuits, gravy, scrambled eggs from the farm, bacon and fresh orange juice. "My Three Sons", "Gilligan's Island" and "I Dream of Jeannie" buzzing in the background from the TV-tube located in the front room of the house. No matter how many folks were there to eat with us, they made sure everyone was served before they sat down beside one another.

My Papa was a jokester and my Grandmother had the prettiest smile and was the most clever woman I've ever known. They were in love - they bickered, they laughed, the told stories non-stop and boy did they create some delicious meals over the years. I sure would love to have them around with me these days, to share some blessings life has tossed my way.

A lot of chatter about new Zinfandel and old favorites this week due to the 2011 ZAP festival in San Francisco. I've always enjoyed Russian River Zinfandels, low octane and pretty such as Davis Family Vineyards and Pellegrini. But a few others stand out particularly from Storrs in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Ridge, Storybook in Napa & T-Vine Cellars, in my book of taste. Excited to learn more today about other Zins...

National Cheese Lovers Day

So an entire day to celebrate ME, a Cheese Lover indeed! I often say that I'm in the wine business to mask my addiction to really good cheese. Cheese is a staple, and I'm not talking Velveta folks. A good bite of cheese can trigger memories just like a fine glass of wine. It brings you back. I know a few people that don't like cheese, they are not to be trusted.

Cheese like wine starts begins with farmers. Cheese starts from the ground up - it's all about a "sense of place". I personally geek out when I'm visiting a cheese shop, the same rush happens when I walk into a fine wine store. You can visit the world by learning the facts from the cheesemonger behind the counter. All of the sudden you're there, standing on the hills of North Eastern Italy among the sheep. Is that weird that I do this?

Whatever, life is too short to eat bad cheese.

Step up your game this year and make a special effort to support your local family owned Cheese Shops - some of the most passionate foodies you'll ever encounter. I almost always end up with a bag of other heavenly snacks and bottles of wine to go with the glorious cheese. Here's an offering from my favorite local shop in Sonoma County:

"Cheesemaker Showcase"
Once in a while we find a cheesemaker that makes us real proud and Rebecca King is that cheesemaker. She owns Garden Variety Cheese Company in Royal Oaks, California. Her farmstead dairy is comprised of herds of sheep and she produces an array of raw milk cheeses, blankets from their wool, offers a CSA meat program and Adopt a Ewe program which offers all of the above. Our selection includes Moonflower, which is aged up to one year and has a dense nutty buttery flavor reminscent of French Pyrenees cheeses. Paired with Anjou Crostini and Savannah Bee acacia honey.

Stop and take a civilized break while running errands back in Dallas and visit Scardello's and in Austin, a stop into Antonelli's is a must. Gourmage is the bomb in New Braunfels too! Ahh, I have a really cool wedge of Italian Cheese in my fridge now made from buffalo's milk...a perfect way to kick off this day of celebration!

Outstanding California Chardonnay

Looking for a unique white wine that will blow your socks off? Well, this amazing 2004 Demuth has been sitting inside a wine cave for a few years now and is one of the most interesting California chardonnays I've ever tasted in my life. Long notes of baked lemons, caramel and almonds & walnuts, I think all my friends who are into "orange wine" from the Jura would flip over this one!

Pellegrini Family Vineyards "Cloverdale Ranch" Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, California.

This beautiful Cabernet from the Pellegrini Family has been a faithful friend for many years now, and keeps on giving back as the clock turns. 2006 sold through quicker than any vintage before, 2010 ended with the new 2007 release that's impressing Cabernet Sauvignon drinkers all over the planet. (mindblowing QPR).

Texas in particular is in love with this bold, lush and beautiful Cabernet made from the famed Cloverdale Ranch about an hour North of the Pellegrini Family Winery in Santa Rosa, Ca. It's not often that I receive "Thank You" notes from buyers for a wine they've selected, but 2007 vintage has provoked grateful emotion.

A Very Happy New Year

I've been hesitant in posting during this last week of 2010. "Wine of the Year", "Winery to Watch", "Year End in Pictures", 'Wrapping up 2010"...so many usual ways to go. What should I should write and say about 2010? Well there's one very honest and true sentence to write: The past 52 weeks were life changing.

Looking back, January and February were full of thrilling times for Davis Family Vineyards in Houston with winning the Grand Champion Best of Show Award for their Napa Cabernet Sauvignon in the biggest and best Wine Competition in the US. March started off in Mendoza, Argentina where I was thrown out of bed when the devastating magnitude 8.8 struck neighboring Chile. A real sign of what blind-sided event was on it's way...?

The Italian portfolio of Indigenous Selections came into my life by a very generous friend in the business by late March. I landed from Argentina to lead a Texas sized staff training and kick-off with the amazing Liz O'Brien, the co-founder of Indigenous. Days were now perfectly full of teaching and selling wines of some of most wonderful families now from Italy too. The month of March ended with an incredible trip to visit Handley Cellars in the Anderson Valley. I can't wait to open "Day Dream", a Pinot Noir I blended alongside Milla Handley that weekend. LIFE WAS GOOD!

April began with a memorable weekend with LIOCO at the Michaud Vineyard. Pig roast, great wines and some of my favorite people in the wine business made this killer weekend a lasting memory for me. The wines of LIOCO are frankly outstanding, every single one of them and I'm honored to be among the LIOCO circle of friends.

The week after tax-day in April, I encountered the most devastating news ever in my professional life. The amazing portfolio of Vine Connections would no longer need my help in Texas. Those who know the truth behind this horrific decision have held me up over the months and inspired me to keep on keeping on. The producers of their portfolio were near and dear to me and all things that drove me out of bed each morning - to do the best job one could ever do for them in Texas. Building and branding Argentine wine and Ginjo Sake from Japan was "cutting edge" and I fought for their presence in fine wine shops and restaurants every hour of the day for 5 years straight. I learned so much from the leaders at Vine Connections over the years and still to this day find their decision to cut me out among the greatest disappointments in my lifetime.

The show must go on...the summer months brought new energy and time to lift up my producers who I work with alongside Avante Beverages. Over the last 6 months, the fine folks at Avante have sold thousands of cases, for this I am most thankful for during this crazy year of the 3-Tier business. I decided to really put the name "TexaCali Ali" on the West Coast grid and move out to Sonoma County in late August.

The Pellegrini Family Vineyards in the Russian River were changing gears and I had the opportunity to help restructure and create a strong consumer sales plan for this legendary family. Running TexaCali back in Texas (thank God for Peet's coffee flowing in the early morning hours!), flying in ever so often and working from the Pellegrini winery has been exhilarating. TexaCali Wine Co. on it's 6th year in business is finally working in true-form.

Words can not describe how grateful I am to be living the dream. I could not have made it here without the towering support of my family and dear friends. 2011 already promises to be the most exciting year yet for TexaCali Wine Co. Stay tuned, it's going to be a blockbuster vintage, many new wines to learn about, adventures to tell and open doors to walk through and experience. Quite possibly the happiest time in the life of TexaCali Wine Co. is right now, this last day of 2010.

My first trip to Italy was back in June of 2003. I stayed in Montalcino for days touring the region and tasting my favorite Brunello producers. The clock tower in the square was over-run by children playing all night, their grandma's strolling in circles while the men sat around the steps trading cards and conversation. Every time I pull a cork of Ciacci, it takes me right back to those magical days...

About the Winery Ciacci Piccolomini d Aragona
The origins of the Ciacci Piccolmini d'Aragona estate go back to the 17th century. In 1877 the property was sold to Francesco Ciacci, head of a Castelnuovo-based family. Then in the mid 1900's, the so-called Palazzo del Vascovo became known as Palazzo Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona after the marriage of Alberto Piccolomini d'Aragona and Elda Ciacci.The Bianchini family inherited in 1985.

Over the course of the last decade Ciacci Piccolomini has become one of the most sought-after producers in all of Italy. This ancient estate has 35 hectares of superior holdings in the prized Castelnuovo dell'Abate zone, including the "Pianrosso" vineyard (from which the best grapes are selected for the Brunello di Montalcino) and the "Fonte" vineyard, which produces grapes for the Rosso di Montalcino. The vineyards are located in the south, wouth-west side of Montalcino at an altitude between 240 and 360 meters above sea level. The stony slopes near the Orcia River benefit from a particularly mild microclimate and the vines grow in ideal climatic conditions.

About the Wine
This "basic" Brunello is a newer addition to the exceptional Ciacci line-up. New vineyards came into production in time for the 2003 vintage, allowing them to release a great- value Brunello di Montalcino as a compliment to their legendary, single-vineyard bottlings from the Pianrosso site. Aged for roughly 3 years in 20-85 hl Slavonian oak barrels, followed by approximately 4 months for bottle refinement. Retail Pricing - $42-47 a bottle.

"The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is wonderfully plump and juicy in its expressive red fruit. Floral notes are woven throughout, giving the wine its sense of lift and proportion. Though not as explosive as the 2004, the 2005 Brunello di Montalcino offers outstanding persistence on the palate and a long, generous finish. This is a terrific effort from Ciacci. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020. Proprietor Paolo Bianchini has turned out a gorgeous set of wines. In 2005 Bianchini elected to forgo his top Brunello, Pianrosso, and bottle just his straight Brunello, which has all of the best fruit he was able to bring in that year. The result speaks for itself. I also tasted a number of Brunellos in cask from vintages 2006 through 2008 that appear quite promising. As good as the Brunellos are, value-conscious readers will want to pay special attention to Ciacci's entry-level wines, which are just as noteworthy."April 2010

The last 2007 Pinot Noir Standing...

Thank God for Handley Cellars! The 2007 production level of their beautiful Pinot Noir was on the larger side of usual. I've received a handful of texts, tweets, messages and phone calls from folks who've recently opened this gorgeous bottle of Handley Cellars Pinot Noir. Last spring I tasted the 2007 for the first time over a sunny lunch at the winery. The chef paired Asian dishes to go with all of the wines, but the Pinot was truly the star of the show.
